Criteria for Selection
When a famous Major League Baseball scout in the United States was asked about his criteria for selecting players, he answered, “Head, heart, and gut.”
When asked about this unusual answer, he explained it clearly: “Head” refers to knowledge and understanding of baseball; “Heart” refers to passion for the game; “Gut” refers to the courage and boldness to perform well even in critical situations.
Then what criteria are used to select workers who will walk together on the journey of the gospel?
“But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.” Ex 18:21
God chooses workers who fear Him, are trustworthy and without deceit, and value God’s commandments more than pure gold—those who are truly capable in both character and ability. Let us also have:
- In our “head,” the knowledge and wisdom of the truth of life
- In our “heart,” a burning passion for the gospel and love for our brothers and sisters
- In our “gut,” the courage to proclaim the mystery of Christ
And if we add to these:
- Humble faith, with hands joined in prayer to God
- Diligent and beautiful feet that spread the message of salvation
it will be even better.
Even if we do not yet possess all these qualities, let us not be anxious. God will generously give to those who ask.
