Advancing Toward an Assured Future

Before we begin anything, there is a mountain we must overcome: fear. Fear usually stems from uncertainty. When we cannot foresee the outcome of our actions, anxiety naturally sets in. We begin to wonder, “Will I really be able to do this?” and worry that things may not go according to plan. As a result, we seek help from various sources or repeatedly examine our decisions in an effort to assure ourselves that we have made the right choice.

Yet change begins when we overcome fear and take the first step. Abraham set out for an unfamiliar land that God would show him, though he did not know where he was going. The priests stood before the surging Jordan River, with the land of Canaan just beyond it. Neither situation offered any sense of security. In a tribal society, Abraham could not know what would happen if he left the land where his family had lived for generations and moved away without a clear destination. Before the priests, there was nothing but a raging current. Nevertheless, they stepped forward because God had already given them His promise.

Those who believe in the future assured by God advance without hesitation. Abraham trusted God’s words: “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.” He set out, received abundant blessings, and prospered. The priests trusted God’s words: “Be strong and courageous. . . . I will give you the land I swore to give to your ancestors.” When they stepped into the Jordan River, the flowing waters parted and dry ground appeared, allowing the Israelites to enter the land of Canaan. God, who knows every beginning and every end, showed them the way forward, became the foundation of their faith, and gave wings to their hope.

“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations.” Mt 24:14

“Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.” Da 12:3

We too have a future assured by God. No matter how difficult something may appear by human standards, whatever God has declared will surely come to pass. This is why, before beginning any work of the gospel, we should not become anxious by measuring our abilities or examining the circumstances around us. Instead, we should press forward with the hope of the kingdom of heaven. Let us firmly believe that God is with us and continue taking one steadfast step after another toward the completion of the gospel of the kingdom. That unwavering faith will lead us toward a future that shines forever.
