After Conscious Sedation Endoscopy

I had a stomach endoscopy for the first time in my life. My husband had previously undergone the procedure without sedation and said it was difficult, so I chose to be sedated without hesitation. The nurse administered the sedative. One second, two seconds, three . . . and my memory faded. When I opened my eyes again, the procedure was already over. I was filled with gratitude to God for allowing me to go through it without any pain or discomfort.

While I was resting in the recovery room, the doctor came by for rounds. But instead of mentioning the test results, he talked about something entirely unrelated. When I asked him about the results, he looked surprised and said:

“I already showed you the pictures and explained everything right after the procedure! You nodded as I went through it.”

I couldn’t help but laugh—I didn’t remember any of it. Though I had appeared to be awake, I was still in a state of light sedation. The doctor then kindly went over the results again, now that I was fully alert.

It made me reflect: if someone is in a spiritually drowsy state, no matter how clearly God’s word is spoken, they won’t truly hear it. And if they don’t hear it, they won’t remember it. Without remembering, practicing the word becomes even more difficult.

Just as Heavenly Father and Mother awaken Their sleeping children with the words of life, I, too, will shine the light of truth upon those in the world who do not discern the times, so that all may awaken from their spiritual slumber and come to walk the path of salvation.
