During the student camp, a cleanup was scheduled at a welfare facility for the disabled. I have seen and read volunteer services only through the church’s monthly magazines or videos. When I heard we were actually going to do it, I was excited but did not know what to do. So before visiting the facility, I watched a video about other Zion students’ volunteer services at nursing homes.
The students of my age who visited nursing homes gave massages to the elderly and entertained them with dances and songs. Just by looking at them, I could tell how hard they prepared. After watching the video, we resolved to unite with each other and do the cleaning well.
On the very day of the volunteer service, we went to the welfare facility for the disabled. After hearing about the welfare institution first, we divided the cleaning areas into stairs, dining hall, window frames, and toilets. Although we split up the area, everyone helped cleaning the dining hall when it was time for lunch. After that, we helped each other in cleaning the stairs and window frames. Finally, by cleaning the restrooms, we finished our volunteer service.
I was worried if I could do well at first, but since I had brothers and sisters with me, I was able to do even the hard work to the end. I realized why God told us to make every effort to unite with each other and become one.
Through the volunteer service, the student group of the Hongseong Zion decided to carry out the volunteer service every two months. We’re going to practice neighborly love even through small volunteer services by loving, considering, and uniting with each other.
