Meaning of a Good Deed

The Harare Church in Zimbabwe

We were worried as the day of our volunteer work was approaching; because we could have a slight problem due to a lack of volunteers. However, on the appointed day, more brothers and sisters gathered than we had expected. Despite the hot weather, we carried out the cleanup with enthusiasm.

While cleaning every corner of the park in Harare, many people came and went. We briefly introduced our Church of God to those who walked up to us and asked us where we were from and why we were picking up trash with such bright faces under the burning sun. A member from the city council, who assigned the area to us to clean, was amazed and said, “I’ve never seen any volunteers who worked this hard without expecting anything in return. I’m sure the church such people belong to is a good church,” and he promised to visit the church on the Sabbath day.

What God wanted was a good deed itself, not the number of participants. We realized that we can be the salt and the light of the world although we are small in size as long as we do the volunteer work with a genuine heart.
