One day before The International Day for Biological Diversity, ASEZ WAO held the 1st ASEZ WAO street campaign on May 21. The International Day for Biological Diversity is a day instituted by the UN for helping with understanding and preserving species diversity. On the 31st, ASEZ WAO held the second street campaign in celebration of Ocean Day instituted by the Korean government. The campaign was held in Myungdong Street, Dream Forest, Gangnam Station, Yeouido Han River Park in Seoul, and Pyeonghwa Park in Busan, and Dongseongno in Daegu.

ASEZ WAO members set up panels on biodiversity and marine ecosystems, and arranged a simple quiz program. Citizens, including senior citizens and children who held their parents’ hands, learned about protecting the global environment by ging ear to the ASEZ WAO’s panel explanations and answering quizzes.

Baek Seung-hwan (from Seoul), listening to the explanation with his son, said, “As a parent, I feel responsibility to pass down a good environment to my children, but due to my busy schedule, I did not regard that as my business. Now that I know many ways to protect the environment in my daily life, I will try my best to protect the environment.” Kwon Bah-dah (from Daegu) said, “I think our society will become a better place if we can raise people’s awareness through this campaign. I hope many people’s awareness will be raised so that the beautiful sea can be maintained for the next generation.” Laura Villar (from Argentina), who is a researcher at a university in Korea, said, “I think it is important to promote environmental policies and activities. In that sense, ASEZ WAO’s activities are great and we are thankful.”

Lim Su-yeon (from Seoul), an ASEZ WAO activist who explained the panel content to the citizens, said, “I thought that protecting the environment is protecting myself, so I worked harder on the campaign. I feel proud that it has become an opportunity for many people to feel the direct connection between environmental issues and their lives, and to take action.”

At the Petersberg Climate Dialogue held in Berlin, Germany, António Guterres the UN Secretary-General, emphasized that the solution to the intensifying climate crisis is a joint response from the global community, and that it is important for each of us to participate in making improvements with interest. ASEZ WAO carries out various projects in each country to encourage more citizens to participate in improving environmental issues, and takes the lead in raising citizens’ environmental awareness through campaigns.
