The Philippines, with its more than 7,000 islands, has stunning natural scenery, attracting numerous tourists. As tourism has grown, the Philippine government is working hard to manage marine debris and prevent trash from land-based sources from entering the sea through rivers. Understanding these environmental issues, ASEZ, the Church of God University Student Volunteer Group, members took action on August 13 by organizing a cleanup of the Polomolok River in South Cotabato, the Philippines. This effort was part of ASEZ’s Blue Carbon [ABC] Movement. Around 90 participants joined, including Korean members who are involved in cultural exchange and volunteer programs, local ASEZ members, and other community members.

Before the cleanup, members conducted a Blue Carbon Awareness Campaign at a civic center in Rañada, Purok, for citizens to highlight the importance of marine ecosystem conservation. Following the campaign, they moved to the Polomolok River, where they collected approximately 300 kg (660 lbs) of trash, cleaning the riverbanks to prevent debris and pollutants from flowing into the sea. ASEZ member, Jhayzel Canlas, remarked, “Not many people are aware of the significance of blue carbon. Today’s event is especially meaningful because it educates citizens about blue carbon and underscores the need to protect our environment.”

On the 16th, ASEZ members visited the Municipality of Polomolok and met with officials, including Municipal Vice Mayor Hon. Melchore J. Jutar, to discuss future environmental initiatives. Vice Mayor Jutar expressed his support to ASEZ for its continuous activities, saying, “Polomolok needs more environmental protection activities like those organized by ASEZ.” City Councilor Hon. Calixto B. Salada, praised ASEZ, stating, “ASEZ’s activities are crucial in the face of climate change. It’s impressive to see young people take responsibility for environmental protection.”
