ASEZ Members of the University of Pretoria Hold the ABC Movement at the Walkerspruit Canal
Keep Canals Clean With Cleanups
South Africa
On August 13, the Church of God University Student Volunteer Group [ASEZ] members from the University of Pretoria held the ASEZ Blue Carbon [ABC] Movement in the Wackerspruit Canal in Sunnyside, Pretoria, South Africa. The ABC Movement is an activity of ASEZ to protect the marine ecosystem and raise citizens’ awareness of blue carbon to achieve carbon neutrality. ASEZ members are making every effort to protect the marine ecosystem by purifying water quality not only in beaches but also in rivers and canals.
More than 90 volunteers, including ASEZ local members and Korean members who visited South Africa, and the Tshwane City Council members, participated in the volunteer service at the request of the Tshwane City Council. The Walkerspruit Canal was close to the University of Pretoria and residential areas, so there were various household wastes dumped around it. ASEZ members collected about two tonnes of garbage from streams and rivers for two hours from 9:30 a.m., and installed PR panels on the promenade to let citizens know the meaning of the ABC Movement and the need to protect the marine ecosystem.
Sean Wilkinson, who participated in the cleanup, said, “What ASEZ is doing for the environment is amazing. I can feel the passion and energy from the members’ activities.” Councilor Leon Kruysha said, “I’m happy to have university students who have environmental awareness in South Africa. I would like to thank ASEZ members for keeping the city clean.”
