The English word passion means a strong feeling to accomplish something. It comes from the Latin word pati, which means suffering or enduring. So the real meaning of passion is to actively cope with suffering, not avoiding it, when faced with hardship in the process of achieving a goal.
Enthusiasm, another word for passion, also has a profound meaning. Zig Ziglar, a successful American author and motivational speaker, said, “Enthusiasm comes from two Greek words en [in] and theos [God]. This can be explained by the fact that there is nothing to fear and we can accomplish everything when we entrust ourselves to God who is in us.”
People who have enthusiasm for the Gospel, too, are not afraid or discouraged in the face of hardship, but rather they deal with it fiercely and powerfully. Those people advance not by their own thoughts and stubbornness, but by the power of God who works in them.
Passion enables us to devote ourselves to the Gospel by entrusting everything to God whatever suffering befalls us. If you have not been passionate until now, it is not too late. Have passion for the Gospel and emanate its power. Then, the amazing history and successful preaching of the early Church will definitely repeat itself.
