The Path to Heaven

It was not long after I had begun driving. Since it was my first time taking the route from work to home on my own, my mom brought her car to my workplace and led the way, driving ahead of me on the commute home. After we arrived safely and I stepped out of the car, she said to me:

“Why were you driving so close behind me? What if you had hit me?”

“I was afraid another car might slip in between us,” I replied.

Quite literally, I had been anxious about losing sight of her. I followed her car closely, almost as if I were chasing it.

“Oh, even if a car had come between us, I would’ve slowed down or adjusted my speed to match yours. There was no need to worry so much.”

She was right. I had focused only on keeping up with her, thinking she was the better driver. It never occurred to me that she would adjust her pace to guide me.

It reminded me of the road to the kingdom of heaven, walking step by step in the footsteps of Heavenly Mother. In truth, I had often felt uneasy, afraid that my weak faith might one day keep me from following Her to the end. But through my own mother, I came to understand, even if only a little, the heart of Heavenly Mother. A quiet thankfulness rose within me, accompanied by a deep and settling peace.

Even if my shortcomings were to cause me to let go of Her hand, I now believe—more firmly than ever—that She would come to me Herself and gently lead me back to the right path. Having begun this journey to heaven, trusting in Mother’s love, I will press on with a thankful heart until I finish the race.
