What Can I Give You?

I was getting ready for work when my five-year-old daughter woke up earlier than usual and came to me, rubbing her eyes.

“Dad! Are you going to work?”

“Yes, I am.”

Then she kept looking at me until I took out a small bag of biscuits from a drawer and gave it to her.

“Yunji! You can have this after breakfast.”

“Is it for me?”

“Uh huh. I want you to have breakfast first, and then you can have this, too.”

Then she seemed to think hard and said,

“What can I give you? Do you want me to leave a biscuit for you?”

I said to her with a smile, “No, you can have it all. I’m okay. See you after work.”

She is still so young that it could be fair to receive, but she thought about what to give me back when I gave her a small bag of biscuits. I was moved. I kept thinking about what she said on my way to work that morning.

‘What can I give you?’

I asked myself, ‘What can I give to my daughter? What can I do for my wife?’ Then I came to realize that I hadn’t spent time with my daughter that I couldn’t even remember when I read a book to her for the last time though she liked reading. Whenever I came back from work, I wanted to rest and didn’t even think about helping my wife.

From now on, I will spend more time with my daughter and read books to her, and also try to help my wife with the housework whenever I have time. I will not only know God’s teaching, “Love one another,” but put it into practice for my family, so that I can be a trustworthy head of my happy and joyful family.
