There is a term Zhiyin (知音) in Chinese character. It literally means “to understand the sound,” and is used to refer to close friends who know and understand each other’s innermost feelings.

This word was created by Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi who lived in the Spring and Autumn period in Chinese history.

Boya was an expert heptachord player, of whom it was said: “When he played, horses looked up to listen.” Ziqi was the only person who ever read what was in Boya’s heart, just by hearing him play the heptachord; he understood even the deep meaning behind his music.

But when Ziqi died from a disease, Boya broke his heptachord strings and never played again from then on. That was because the one who truly understood his music was gone. There’s no one more precious than the one who truly understands you.

“. . . then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Forgive, and deal with each man according to all he does, since you know his heart (for you alone know the hearts of men).” 2 Ch 6:30

God knows our hearts better than anyone else and understands the feelings deep down in our hearts. Although the world does not recognize us, God who created mankind and all things in the universe is with us as our “Zhiyin.” We are the happiest people in the world. Let us engrave the precious One in our hearts and blow the gospel trumpet loudly. Then God will listen to us and make everything go well for us.
