On January 8, the Church of God in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, held a special event to comfort families and neighbors exhausted from the COVID-19 pandemic, improve their relationships, and deliver a message of hope. The “Chamber Orchestra Concert and Happy Seminar with Neighbors” was held at the Experimental Theater at University of Malaya. More than 500 people attended the event, including members of the Church of God and their invitees and prominent figures such as Congress member Lee Chean Chung and Professor Raymond Ooi at the University of Malaya.
Before the event began, the VIPs gave congratulatory speeches. Lee Chean Chung, a congress member, said, “Music is a tool that heals our souls who have suffered financial difficulties and pains due to COVID-19 for years, and helps us understand one another.” He expressed his gratitude to the Church of God for organizing a meaningful event. Sylvia Wong Tyng Ying, a psychiatrist, said, “A society is made up of the core unit called family. I hope that everyone will make a happy family while enjoying the event and have a happy new year.”
The event began with a chamber orchestra composed of 23 local members. The orchestra performed the New Songs of the Church of God, “Heavenly Father Ahnsahnghong” and “The Gospel of Glory,” and expressed the love of Heavenly Father in the Bible in a gentle but magnificent melody. The choir sang a song “When You Believe,” one of the original sound tracks from the movie “The Prince of Egypt,” accompanied with the orchestra, inspiring the hearts of the audience.
In the seminar that highlighted the importance of family, the members who are office workers appeared as presenters and enlightened the meaning of family and the love of parents. From the story of a father to the story of a mother, they unfolded the stories of the love of parents that children would never realize. Afterwards, the orchestra performed an insert song from animation “Frozen,” and the choir sang the song “You Raise Me Up,” to cheer up everyone. Then, the event ended.
As a side event, the Korean culture experience event was held. As Korean culture has been highly regarded, experiencing Korean culture became popular in Malaysia. The young adults prepared gimbap, pancakes in the shape of a heart, and rice cakes to make the participants feel like they were in Korea. There were also traditional games such as biseokchigi, Jegichagi, and throwing a tuho, making it a great place to have fun and communicate with their friends and family.
Professor Leong Yuen Yoong of the Jeffrey Sachs Sustainable Development Center at Sunway University said, “I was greatly moved by the world-class relief efforts and good influence of the Church of God. I’m impressed by how they work for sustainable development in all fields such as volunteer service, education, and culture.” Helqa Binti Pailin, a university student, said, “It was nice to be able to learn not only the importance of family but also Korean culture. It was my first time seeing an orchestra performance, and it was a great experience.”
In addition to Malaysia, the Church of God holds concerts and Happy Seminars in the Philippines, Peru, and the United States to deliver comfort and hope to people around the world.
