Throughout September, members of God’s Church in Peru engaged in large-scale tree planting to commemorate Tree Day, which falls on September 1, Peru’s national holiday. This initiative was carried out in about 30 locations across the country, including Lima, Arequipa, Chimbote, Jaén, Ferreñafe, Trujillo, Huánuco, Oxapampa, Ayacucho, and more. A diverse group of around 1,500 participants, including ASEZ (Church of God University Student Volunteer Group) and ASEZ WAO (Church of God Young Adult Worker Volunteer Group) members, church members, and citizens, collectively planted approximately 6,420 trees.

By planting trees suited to the climate and vegetation of each region, the memers not only beautified the environment but also aroused citizens’ interest in environmental issues. Local media outlet reported their planting of 3,000 trees in the Las Rocas de Chilina Regional Ecological Park located in Alto Selva Alegre, Arequipa.

In San Juan de Lurigancho, Lima, ASEZ WAO members raised awareness about the importance of tree planting by planting about 300 trees along a main street frequented by citizens. As the trees grow, they are expected to contribute to preventing landslides caused by heavy rains. The Minister of Environment Albina Ruiz participating in the tree planting, emphasized the importance of young people’s passion and ability to execute, and expressed hope for continued cooperation between ASEZ WAO and the Ministry of Environment.

Tree planting also extended to Tarapoto, the Amazon rainforest region, and Puerto Maldonado, the source of the Amazon River. The local governments supported the volunteers by providing them with necessary tools for tree planting. Edwin Felix, an official from the Tambopata Municipality, said, “In the next two years, the trees will bear fruit, the streets will become more beautiful, and the citizens will be happier. I hope I will be able to be with you all.” Diana Chipana, a volunteer from Huancayo, participated in tree planting along the Shullcas River in Huancayo, said, “I feel proud that this is not just about planting trees but about planting hope for a better future.”

The Church of God plans to continue collaboration with the Peruvian government and local authorities to conduct various environmental protection activities, including tree planting and street cleanup. This effort aims to take the lead in addressing climate change, recognized as a global challenge.
