On April 17, ASEZ, the Church of God University Student Volunteer Group, in New Windsor, NY, U.S., held the ASEZ Future Leaders Forum at the Low Library rotunda at Columbia University. About 90 people, including ASEZ members, South Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, professors, and environmental activists participated, sharing opinions of the roles of the university students living in the era of climate crisis.
Before the event, a panel exhibition was held to introduce ASEZ’s diverse climate response activities. Some of guests expressed their willingness to participate in ASEZ’s environment protecting activities.
At the discussion that began around 1 p.m., the South Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Cecilia A.M. Adeng, and environmentalist Paul Presendieu served as panelists.
Ms. Adeng emphasized the attitude that young adults need as leaders who will open the future of the earth in the era of climate crisis, saying that we should take responsibility for protecting the environment. Environmental Activist Mr. Presandieu likened environmental activities to diplomacy, sharing his experiences as the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA) Global Goals Ambassador. He said, “When we do work for the environment, everyone becomes an environmental ambassador,” emphasizing the importance of individual role for change.
Dr. Raffael Jovine, who runs a startup focused on developing eco-friendly carbon reduction technologies, complimented ASEZ, stating, “As the world undergoes significant changes due to environmental pollution, events like this provide great inspiration for protecting the earth.” The ASEZ members were reminded of the role of individuals in climate crisis and the importance of change, and expressed their determination to take the lead in environmental protection as future leaders and carry out meaningful activities.
