A group of people appear before Jesus who is teaching people in the temple courts. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees bring in a woman caught in adultery.
“In the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” they asked Jesus.
They are using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. To them who keep on questioning him, Jesus opens His mouth.
“If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”
They felt guilty and left one by one, and Jesus and the woman were left.
Jesus says to the woman in a low voice.
“Then neither do I condemn you. Go now and leave your life of sin.”
One thing Jesus asked the woman to do, who escaped with bare life because of her sin, was to leave her life of sin.
What God asks us to do today is not different. We had committed grave sins and deserved the torment of hell, but God has given us time for repentance without condemning us. That’s why we could escape the prearranged punishment and obtain the opportunity of salvation. If we keep sinning, forgetting the grace of God and disobeying the law of life, we cannot help but be deprived of the blessing of the kingdom of heaven God restored for us.
When sin’s deceitfulness shakes our minds, or when our sinful ways appear unknowingly, let us remember the request of Christ who did not condemn our grave sins but granted us the opportunity of salvation, so that we can shake off our sins and enter the kingdom of heaven with holy faith.
