You of Little Faith, Why Did You Doubt?
Matthew 14:22-33
Jesus lets His disciples get into a boat and go to the other side. And He alone goes up to a mountain to pray. The boat is buffeted by the waves as the wind is against it. Around dawn, Jesus goes out to them, walking on the lake. As the disciples see Him walking on the lake, they are terrified, thinking He is a ghost and cry out in fear.
“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
Jesus reassures the disciples. Then Peter steps forward pompously.
“Lord, if it’s You, tell me to come to You on the water.”
Jesus calls him to come. Peter gets down out of the boat and walks on the water toward Jesus. However when he sees the wind, he is afraid. Soon, he begins to sink, crying out urgently.
“Lord, save me!”
Immediately, Jesus reaches out His hand and catches him.
Jesus scolds him.
“You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
As Jesus and Peter climb into the boat, the wind dies down.
Sometimes, we feel exultant as if we can do everything with faith, but when we are faced with difficulties, we are easily seized with fear and become doubtful and discouraged. It is important to have faith, but what is more important is to keep the faith.
It was a very short moment when Peter became afraid of the wind and forgot the presence of Jesus before him. However, within this brief moment, doubt was placed in his heart.
When a man only looks at the situation in front of him, forgetting that God is with him, he comes to lose faith in an instant, being filled with fear and doubt, no matter how strong his faith was. The true faith is trusting in God until the end.
This world is full of things that weaken our faith. However, if we are convinced that God is always with us, we can surely strive through the waves that we meet in the sea of the world. Let us open our eyes and see! God is before us!
