On May 8, 2019, a woman in her thirties named Amanda Aller got lost while walking in a nature reserve in Maui, Hawaii. Since she left her cell phone in the car, there was no way for her to contact anyone. The more she walked to find the way out, the deeper she went into the woods and the darker the day got.
Then, she had to go through all types of struggles to survive. At night when the temperature dropped, she covered herself with leaves or dug into the mud to keep her body warm. During the day, she wandered around and looked for food such as fruit, water, and insects. One day, she fell off a cliff and injured her leg. She even lost her shoes in the water during a flood stage. Seventeen days after being lost in the woods, she dramatically met a rescue team 11 km from the area where she departed from. Although the official search and rescue had already ended, the family continued to look for her with volunteers by offering a reward.
Her father burst into tears at the news of his daughter’s rescue. “I didn’t give up even for a moment. I firmly believed that if we continued the search, we would find her.” Although Amanda experienced the most difficult time in her life, her family’s eagerness to save her without giving up was a ray of light for her life.
