Two thousand years ago, the resurrected Christ appeared to His disciples, filling them with the unwavering assurance that those who believe in Him would one day share in the glory of resurrection. After the Crucifixion, the once-fearful disciples found renewed courage and began to boldly proclaim the gospel. In this way, the resurrection of Christ became a pivotal moment not only in the history of the new covenant gospel, but also in the destiny of mankind, who had no escape from death. It offered an awe-inspiring and life-giving hope: the hope of resurrection.
In accordance with the teachings of the Bible and the example set by Jesus, the Church of God observes the Day of Resurrection on the day following the first Sabbath after the Festival of Unleavened Bread. This sacred day commemorates the resurrection of Christ. This year, Resurrection Day was celebrated in Churches of God around the world on April 20.
At the New Jerusalem Pangyo Temple, the Resurrection Day service was marked with deep reverence and gratitude. Heavenly Mother offered a heartfelt prayer of thanks to Heavenly Father, who granted the forgiveness of sins, the hope of resurrection, and the promise of transformation to the souls who were once destined to die due to their sins in heaven. Mother fervently prayed that the children of God would follow Father’s example fully, experiencing a “resurrection of faith” worthy of His grace. She also expressed the earnest hope that those wandering aimlessly through life would be led to Zion, where they could partake in the blessing of eternal life.
General Pastor Kim Joo-cheol delivered a sermon on the origins and spiritual meaning of Resurrection Day. The Resurrection Day originates from the Day of Firstfruits in the Old Testament. The Day of Firstfruits commemorated the Israelites’ safe crossing of the Red Sea after their exodus from Egypt, with God’s help. It was observed on the Sunday following the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when the first sheaf of the harvest was offered to God (Ex 15:19; Lev 23:10–12). Jesus came as the reality of the Firstfruits offering and fulfilled its prophecy by rising from the dead on this very day as the firstfruits of those who had fallen asleep. He also opened His disciples’ spiritual eyes by blessing and breaking bread and sharing it with them (1 Co 15:20–24; Lk 24:1–10, 13–35).
“Jesus’ resurrection is undeniable proof that we, too, will be resurrected. Our life in God does not end in death; it continues into resurrection, transformation, and the glory of heaven,” emphasized General Pastor. He urged members to uphold their mission and mindset rooted in the faith of resurrection: “The people of the early Church firmly believed that the dead in God would rise and the living would be transformed into spiritual beings. Holding fast to this hope, they overcame suffering and proclaimed the blessing to all. Let us follow their example and lead humanity to the world of hope by preaching the new covenant and the promise of heaven” (1 Co 15:12–19, 50–58; Php 3:20–21; 1 Pe 1:3; Jn 5:24–29; 1 Th 4:13–18).
After the worship service, Mother repeatedly encouraged the members, awakening them to the glorious and beautiful hope of the kingdom of heaven, saying, “Let us be diligent in guiding people to Zion, the safe dwelling place of God, and share the joy and hope that Father has given us.” Those who partook of the Resurrection Day bread reflected on the hope that God had granted them and renewed their determination to deliver this living hope to all people.
