After completing the long life in the wilderness, the Israelites finally enter the land of Canaan. By God’s command, each tribe casts lots for the inheritance of the land. When it comes time to divide the land west of the Jordan, Caleb approaches Joshua.
“I am today, eighty-five years old, but I am still as strong and vigorous today as the day I explored the land of Canaan. Now give me this hill country [Hebron] that God promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, God helping me, I will drive them out just as He said,” says Caleb.
Forty-five years ago, through Moses, God promised Caleb Hebron as his inheritance. Caleb has not forgotten what God promised him that day.
Then Joshua blesses Caleb, seeing his resolution, and gives him Hebron as his inheritance.
Although the Israelites entered the land of Canaan, powerful regions like Hebron were left unconquered. Hebron which Caleb wanted to inherit could be taken by going out to battle. But still, Caleb didn’t mind at all though old; he believed he could drive them out with the help of God. Over many years, things changed a lot, but his mind was set, believing that God’s promise would surely be accomplished.
“I, however, followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly” Jos 14:8
God’s promise never changes even if the environment changes and time passes. If there’s something that changes, it’s our mind that holds that promise. Caleb moved forward fearlessly and unfalteringly and obtained inheritance that was promised to him. Likewise, let’s follow God with undivided devotion.
