ASEZ, the Church of God University Student Volunteer Group, and ASEZ WAO, the Church of God Young Adult Worker Volunteer Group won the Green World Award and the Green Apple Award in succession.
These two awards are the international environmental awards organized by the Green Organisation—an international environmental nonprofit organization in the United Kingdom. Established in 1994, these awards annually recognize and reward outstanding environmental practices globally, spanning both private and public sectors. The evaluation process considers nine criteria, including environmental benefits, innovation, and sustainability of the activity. The Green World Award, an extension of the Green Apple Award, is particularly esteemed, reserved for organizations that excel across all criteria.
Due to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the awards ceremony, traditionally held at the British Parliament House (Palace of Westminster), was relocated to a hotel near the Houses of Parliament this year. On November 15, the ceremony took place at the Royal Horseguards Hotel in London. On this day, ASEZ won the Gold Prize at the 2020 Green World Awards for the “Greenship Network” project. The “Greenship Network” connects individuals, societies, and nations to fulfill environmental responsibilities as global citizens. As part of the project, ASEZ has worked in partnership with 168 government agencies and local authorities and with 226 international or civic organizations over the past five years by carrying out diverse environmental activities such as the “Environment Day Campaign” and “Green Campus Cleanup.” Approximately 56,000 people, including AZEZ members and citizens in many countries, have participated in those activities.
ASEZ WAO received a Green World Gold Award and a Green Apple Gold Award in 2020, and a Green Apple Silver Award in 2021, acknowledging its “No More GPGP” and “Green Workplace” projects. “No More GPGP” is a project to reduce plastic use. The goal is to prevent the creation of a second Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) by collecting 80,000 metric tons of discarded plastic. ASEZ WAO members carried out environmental cleanups 710 times in 27 countries, including Korea, the United States, and Peru, from January 2019 to August 2023. They signed MOUs with government agencies and local authorities in various countries and held seminars and meetings to draw the participation of citizens and international communities. “Green Workplace” focuses on saving water and power, aiming to instill environmental protection habits starting from the workplace in order to address climate change. Implementing 12 practices, such as turning off monitors and power strips, turning off faucets, and using public transportation, can result in an individual reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 589 kg [approx. 1,300 lbs] per year, equivalent to planting 93 trees. Members from countries, including Korea, Japan, India, Australia, and South Africa, contribute to a virtuous cycle of spreading healthy environmental habits.
Roger Wolens, CEO of the Green Organisation, and environmental activist Phil Williams, present at the awards ceremony, supported the activities of ASEZ and ASEZ WAO, by signing. Appointed as “Green World Ambassadors” after winning Green World Awards, ASEZ and ASEZ WAO will continue to take the lead in environmental protection with youthful spirit and passion for a sustainable future for the earth and humanity.
