A Life of Steady Change

I once read that it is harder to maintain a changed self than to change from one’s current state to a better one. Looking back on my life, I have found that to be true. I could make plans and try something once or twice, but carrying it out consistently was never easy.

The life of faith is the same. Even though I always resolve to change and live as a true child of God, it is difficult for us—who still carry the nature of sin—to put that realization into practice every single day, every single moment. To such people as us, God gave this teaching:

“Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” 1 Ti 4:7–8

In obedience to God’s word, I am learning to train myself steadily—to look only to God, to share His love, and to live according to His words. Even when the path becomes difficult, I am thankful because God— who prays for us, comforts us so that we will not grow weary, and gently assures us that we can do well—is always with me.

Whether people see me or not, I want to be someone who quietly and faithfully practices God’s word, training wholeheartedly in godliness. I want to live a life that does not stop, but continues to grow and change—day by day, step by step.
