What Is Prayer?
Prayer is a ritual to ask not only for God’s blessings, but also for His help when we face various difficulties that we cannot handle by ourselves.
It is hard for us, humans, to live without help from others in this world because we have limited abilities. Likewise, we cannot live without God’s help. Therefore, we should pray to God, who knows our weaknesses and helps us.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”Mt 7:7–8
By these words, God promised us that everything will be done when we pray for it. The ability of prayer is boundless, and it has the power to create something from nothing. Therefore, we should pray to God to receive God’s help.
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”Isa 41:10
Then, let’s see more in detail what prayer is.
First, prayer is the breath of the spirit.
All men can live by breathing. Likewise, the spirits of the saints who believe in God can live by praying.
Second, prayer is the conversation between God and us.
God is the Father of our spirits and we are the children of God. Therefore, we are to have conversations with God, sharing joyful news when we are joyful, and sorrows when we are having difficulties.
Third, prayer is like calling God.
Regardless of the time, whenever we pray, our prayers reach up to God and God answers our prayers.
In our life of faith, there are many things we need to ask, seek, and knock about. When we ask, seek, and knock at every moment, God fulfills our wishes.
