On January 25, ASEZ, the World Mission Society Church of God University Student Volunteer Group, carried out a plastic waste cleanup at Baseco Beach in the Philippines as part of the Zero Plastic 2040 campaign. About 140 people participated in the activity, including ASEZ members from Saint Clare College of Caloocan, Korean members, and officials from DENR-NCR, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–National Capital Region. Together, they took action to collect plastic waste that harms marine ecosystems.
The cleanup began around 7 a.m. and continued for two hours in order to avoid the hottest part of the day. Participants focused on collecting improperly discarded plastic waste, including fishing nets, used tires, and plastic bags. Through their united efforts, they gathered 960 kg (2,120 lbs) of waste, including various types of household refuse. Park Garam from Tongmyong University said, “When so many people worked together, the dirty beach quickly became clean. It felt as though my heart became clean along with the coastline.” Through the campaign, ASEZ members raised awareness of the need to reduce plastic waste and protect marine ecosystems, putting love for neighbors and the environment into practice.
