Why Do We Pray?

What is the reason for us to pray? Some people pray aimlessly without a goal. However, if we know the reason and purpose for prayer, we would be able to pray more sincerely.

Let us see why we should pray.

1) We should pray in order to give thanks to God

In our daily life, we often feel and experience God’s love and grace. We pray to give thanks to God for numerous blessings He bestows upon us. There is a prayer of thanks for our daily bread before a meal, a prayer to give thanks to God for providing solutions to difficult problems, and a prayer of thanks for the fact that God is our hope in any stressful situations we face. When we have grown accustomed to giving thanks to God for His grace, God will grant us even more things to be thankful for.

2) We should pray to receive God’s help

We encounter many difficulties in life. But since our abilities are limited, we need God’s help. Therefore, we should pray to God, who knows our weaknesses and helps us (Isa 41:10).

3) We should pray to obey the word of God (and to receive what we need)

Jesus promised us that He would undoubtedly answer our prayers, as follows:

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”Mt 7:7–8

In our life of faith, there are many things we need to ask, seek, and knock. When we ask, seek, and knock as Jesus said, God will fulfill everything we desire.

4) We should pray to overcome temptation

Jesus overcame Satan’s temptation after He fasted and prayed for forty days (Mt 4:1–11). He said, “Be always on watch, and pray so that you may be able to overcome temptation” (Lk 21:34–36). When Daniel was taken captive in Babylon, he prayed toward Jerusalem three times a day. By praying to God eagerly every day, he was saved in the den of the lions (Da 6:19–25). Job finally overcame Satan’s temptation by praying to God (Job 42:10). And Jonah led the wicked people of Nineveh to repent and receive salvation by praying for repentance, after he decided to obey God’s command (Jn 2:1–3:10).

As the forefathers of faith overcame difficulties through prayer, we must lead a life of prayer to overcome all kinds of temptations and trials.

The reason we must pray to God is to give thanks for the grace that God bestows upon us, and to ask Him who is almighty, for help. Also, it is necessary to pass the various kinds of tests that are given to us. We should receive lots of blessings through the prayer of thanks and earnest petition that God is pleased with.
